They Can Shove That Square Thing Up You Know Where. Right?
I have used my Galaxy S20 Ultra as my daily driver for two years. It’s a fantastic product, and it’s definitely my favourite smartphone from the year 2020. Upgrading every two years, Galaxy S22 Ultra should be a natural upgrade this year. So with that in mind, it’s reasonable to conclude that I’m thrilled for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s release, right?
No, not in the traditional sense. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is an entirely different device than the Galaxy S20/S21 Ultra, at least in terms of design. Instead, as anyone can tell just by looking at it, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is more of a follow-up to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra than it is a new device in its own right.
Even while many Android enthusiasts will be delighted by this, I must confess that I am more disappointed than anything else.
During the Galaxy S22 Ultra briefing, Samsung explicitly highlighted the device’s ties to the Note line of smartphones. It envisioned the phone as a cross between the best features of the S line and the best features of the Note line. However, it also informed us that it is no longer considering the Note line a specific product but rather an “experience” rather than a product. In other words, it’s unlikely that this will be the last time you see elements of the Note’s design…
